You can’t give birth to adults.
What does that even mean?
Hi, I’m Carmen Sognonvi.
Keep watching, and I’ll explain what that phrase means, and I’ll tell you what it has to do with being an entrepreneur.
[animated intro]
By the way, if you want to get a list of the 7 tools I rely on to run all the marketing at my business, head on over to CarmenSognonvi.com/Tools.
I’ll show you everything from how I track our flyer distribution to who I use for printing and graphic design.
I spoke at a conference recently. And tne of the other speakers was Brian Smith, the founder of Ugg Australia and inventor of the Ugg boot.
In his presentation, he made this rather startling statement:
You can’t give birth to adults.
He went on to explain that we all know that when we give birth, it’s to a baby, not an adult.
No matter how much milk we give the baby, how much food we feed the baby, that baby isn’t going to become an adult overnight. You have to wait for the baby to become a kid, then a teenager, and finally an adult.
But somehow when it comes to business, entrepreneurs forget this rule.
They don’t have any patience. They don’t want to wait. They want to hit the fast-forward button and skip to the good parts.
I’ve felt the same way at many points in my own journey. When you’re first starting out, it’s frustrating. You feel like you don’t know what you’re doing. Or you think you’re doing all the right things but nothing seems to be working the right way.
But you have to go through those phases in order to break through to the next one.
When we sign up new members at Urban Martial Arts, they’ll often say, “wow you guys are really organized and professional.” And they say that because we have checklists and forms that make everything super-clear about our policies and procedures.
What they don’t realize is that every single process and system we have in place is there because years back, something when horribly, horribly wrong. It was so bad that we asked ourselves, what can we do to prevent something like this from ever happening again? And presto, a new system was born.
So in order to create a business that’s a well-oiled machine, different parts of the machine first have to break down. That’s how you know where to apply the oil.
It’s not pretty, and it can be extremely frustrating, but it’s a necessary process you have to go through.
So next time you find yourself feeling impatient, take a deep breath, relax, and try to honor the phase you’re in right now. It may not feel like it, but you’re laying the foundation now for greatness in the future.
