Bonus Video: What Gorillas Can Teach You About Avoiding Complacency

Complacency is the kiss of death for entrepreneurs. The moment you stop trying, the moment you start settling for second-best, is the moment you give up on your business.

This is a bonus video on how local business owners can stop themselves from getting complacent.

So here’s my bonus power tip. It’s actually a little mental trick I like to play on myself.

Whenever I start feeling a little complacent about our martial arts school, I ask myself this:

What would I do differently today if Tiger Schulmanns opened up a school next door to us?

Now for those of you who aren’t familiar with Tiger Schulmanns, they’re the 800 lb gorilla of the martial arts industry. They’ve got 40 schools across the country, great brand recognition, premium pricing, and killer business systems.

In other words, they’d be a formidable competitor.

Figure out who the 800 lb gorilla is in your industry. If you own a coffee shop, maybe your gorilla is Starbucks. If you own a clothing store, maybe your gorilla is Forever 21.

Think about what you’d do differently in your business if they opened up next door to you.

Would you spent more time cultivating meaningful relationships with your customers? Would you find ways to create a better customer experience? Would you invest in a better selection of inventory?

Take out a pen and a sheet of paper and make a list.

When you’ve got your list written out, read through it and ask yourself this:

Why are you not doing these things right now?

You shouldn’t wait until there’s a threat to your business to step your game up. Your customers deserve better!

So what are you waiting for? All those ideas you came up with are things you should be implementing today!
