Has this ever happened to you? You sit down on January 1st to map out your business goals for the new year and bam! Next thing you know it’s December 31st and you haven’t accomplished a single one of those goals!
Hi, I’m Carmen Sognonvi.
What I just described has happened to me a few times, so a couple years ago I decided to do things differently – and it allowed me to not only to accomplish the goals I set, but to overshoot them.
Stick around and I’ll explain exactly how I went about it and what results I saw.
By the way, for more useful tips on running a bricks-and-mortar local business, be sure to check out my blog at CarmenSognonvi.com.
I cover everything from how to get more customers to how to close more sales.
In the last video I did on goal-setting, I explained the way my husband Serge and I were going to go about setting our goals for the year.
First, we wrote out a 3-year vision. We imagined what our ideal life would be like three years from now. We described in detail all the things we’d accomplished in our business, in our relationships, in our health, in our spirituality.
This exercise really made us stretch and think big, because a lot can change in a 3-year span.
Once we had our 3-year vision written out, we figured out where we needed to be a third of the way through. What would we need to have accomplished by the end of year 1 in order to make the 3-year vision come true?
Based on that, we created our goals for the coming year.
Now, this wasn’t the first time Serge and I had set goals, so we knew that if we didn’t build in some kind of accountability, it would be easy to forget about them and fall behind.
So we devoted one full day each quarter to revisit our goals, assess our progress, and course-correct if necessary.
We scheduled the days in advance and held our meetings off-site so that we would have no interruptions, but also because being in an unfamiliar environment has a way of triggering a different way of thinking.
So how did it work?
Well, the results blew us away.
Essentially, most of the goals that we were hoping to accomplish in 3 years, we were able to accomplish in just 1 year!
Some of those were business goals: like expanding our space, bringing on more staff, and growing our revenues.
But one of our personal goals was to have a second child and even that came true in just a year!
So I’m now a big believer in this method and I would encourage you to try it out in your business. If you do, please let me know how it worked for you!
