Carmen’s Story

Upon graduating from Columbia University, Carmen joined Goldman Sachs as an analyst. But she soon realized that the world of investment banking wasn’t for her. She discovered her love of marketing when she joined a boutique marketing consultancy. There, she worked with clients such as Morgan Stanley, MAC Cosmetics, American Express, and Pricewaterhouse Coopers on customer loyalty programs, internal communications campaigns, and product launches.

A few years later, Carmen developed a strong interest in issues related to race and identity. In 2004, she launched Racialicious, an award-winning blog about the intersection of race and pop culture. She used her marketing knowledge to grow her blog’s audience to over a quarter million readers a month. Her views were featured regularly in media outlets including CNN, MSNBC, and The New York Times. She visited as a guest lecturer at Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia, among many other colleges and universities across the country.

In 2010, Carmen decided to retire from public activism and support her husband’s new business, a martial arts school in Brooklyn, New York. She joined Urban Martial Arts as General Manager. Within just four years, she tripled the number of students enrolled and expanded the school’s space to double its size.

Carmen graduated from Columbia University with a BA in Political Science and lives in Brooklyn, New York with her husband and two daughters.
